Comfortable, clean accommodation and easy, efficient check-in at almost midnight after arriving on the ferry from Aberdeen. We stayed in the self-catering apartment across the road from the main hotel. It was well-equipped and spacious. Would happily stay there again for a longer holiday.Marilyn D2024-09-29This is unfortunately not good Was booked this via a small tour and it is really not good. Our 1st room there was no cold water just scalding hot and kinda dirty, but a larger bed. They had us change rooms since the hot water issue cannot be fixed. They moved us to a smaller room with a smaller bed and every spring could be felt really painful. Was cleaner aside from the 2 spiders and had a view that honestly I’m not enjoying. The bathroom had just a standup shower which is usually not an issue but a room charging over $200 a night shouldn’t have a really bad shower curtain or cracked plastic glasses in the bathroom. We are currently looking to see what we can find and hopefully be refunded if we are able to find something better. I am doing this review in one of the worst beds ever and at this price is really unacceptable for the hassle and uncomfortably.mullydad2024-09-22Non-Truth Had a previously bad hotel experience so had manager show me rooms (party of 3 couples) prior to checkin. Rooms were not currently available due to cleaning ongoing. He showed me and a male friend one room…when we wanted to see the others he insisted all rooms were exactly the same. Upon returning for checkin time the room I was assigned was NOT the same room seen. Other parties got what was shown but me and my partner did not. We got a full size bed and our traveling friends had king size bed rooms (this is what I was shown and told adamantly ALL rooms are the same). Upon inquiry regarding rooms - I was then told - the rooms are the same category. Now I see a huge difference in categories between a full size bed and a king sized bed. But my room is the same charge as my traveling group-not less due to bed/room size being smaller (after being told all rooms are the same). Upon addressing, the manger plans to make no adjustments. There are many bus travelers thru this area that apparently frequent this hotel. The complaint of one individual is of no consequence when bus loads come thru. Do yourself a favor and find a comfy B&B where service is individualized. Being misled about your accommodation-after insisting on seeing them prior feels like your being taken advantage of. Don’t trust anyone no matter how much they profess “all are the same!”Coopcasa C2024-09-22Super stay We stayed at the Ayre Hotel for 3 nights in August 2024 as part of an Alfa Coach Holiday. It is one of the nicest hotels I have stayed in - the rest of my immediate party agreed too! It is situated next to the harbour with the gin distillery, bus station and Welcome Centre in close proximity. Evening meals were varied and to a very high standard - bar meals are also available.Nicola W2024-09-03Great Location The location was perfect for us. virtually on the quay. Ila (no s) was incredible, she checked us in, served dinner, served breakfast and checked us out. Thank you Ila you are a star. The room was fine, the bed very comfortable. All in all our stay at The Ayre was very good.Katharine M2024-08-29A comfortable seafront hotel with impressive views and a very pleasant restaurant! The Ayre Hotel in Kirkwall was a wonderful choice for our visit to Orkney. I can't deny the front of the place on photos made me hesitate, but the interior and overall standard was really very good. We chose a sea view and the additional cost was worth it for a few days stay. That view in the morning and the last view each evening is a rare treat. Our visit would have been enhanced markedly had the hotel placed irons and ironing boards in those rooms at least where a supplement was paid. It's a modest cost but makes a real difference for guests. Car parking at the hotel is very easy and access to the town also very convenient with large stores only a short distance away. The restaurant was a true benefit! Mostly good quality food although the menu could have been a little more imaginative. Nevertheless the service was impressive and on those nights we ate in, we enjoyed our choices. All told, if you looking for a reasonable hotel with local conveniences, this one is a fair choice. Not perfect (very few places are in reality!) but I would definitely return there without hesitation. I would also add a final thank you to the younger staff there in particular. It was noticeable just how good they were in their service standards and should be recognised for their work ad well as their commitment.Chris K2024-08-18

“Stayed in the Ayre last night and tonight (tonight unplanned). On the first night Zoe and Finlay were doing a fantastic job running a very busy dining room. There was some confusion but let’s just say it didn’t come from the young team. Second night Zoe an Jason delivering the usual high standards of service. ”.

“We stayed in room 62 in the anex Convenient warm and comfortable, bathroom clean and modern, there is a lift. Staff all brilliant and helpfull, and the food is great, our room was very hot and they supplied a fan which was great. Beware the mosquitos, do not leave the windows open because of they like you you will get bitten. But this hotel is still brilliant, do not be put off by the scaffold etc.!”.

“I have never ever before written a review, but the dinner we just had at this restaurant was just so amazing, that I had to do so. The filet steak (medium rare) was 100% at the point, the pepper sauce perfect and the toffee dessert „over the moon“! Three thumbs up!”.
